Moments of Impact: Creating Conditions of Greatness at Camp

03/07/2023 11:00 AM
Throughout our lives we remember the PEAKS, PITS and TRANSITIONS. This includes memories of celebration, joy and excitement through adventure deemed as the "peaks." The "pits" include moments of deep pain, struggle or challenge. The "transitions" are moments of changes in our environment, people in our lives and context causing us to step outside our comfort zones. Often ALL of these moments can happen in the CAMP experience. How can we as adults support kids through these moments for them to impact human development and growth in positive and productive ways? We must do this by creating an environment grounded in safety through a structure of predictable routines and procedures. Then once kids feel safe they start to feel connected to the adults at camp and their peers-they build trusted relationships, are able to take risks and be vulnerable and communicate their wants and needs. Once these basic needs are met-kids can learn, grow and thrive at camp by growing their critical thinking and executive functioning skills to be able to embrace and adapt ALL of the moments of impact-peaks, pit and transitions. Truly creating "conditions for greatness!" Join as we start by reflecting on our own values, experiences and our WHY to our work with youth and how these connects to how we show up through our behavior and intentions at camp. This will truly be a powerful interactive learning experience of personal self-reflection and awareness as well as tangible connections to apply to our work in camp spaces.
